I was born in the United States of America and raised in the South. My background is of black ancestry. There are many traditions and customs that were taught and currently practiced from our past. However, I feel that many traditions have been lost. One of which is West African cultures. Another is a connection to places of our ancestors in the world. Even though there has been a lack of connection to one specific region, I have felt connected to the world. This connection is one of the principal forces behind Olorun Skin.
Growing up in the south I was raised Missionary Baptist. The Lord, our God, was prominent in my rearing. We went to church on Sunday and throughout the week for various activities. It was this rearing that led me to believe in the omnipotence of God. I felt comfort in knowing that he was there for me. To me, God is constant.
Fast forward to this decade in my life, and I’m the same natural loving, planet loving woman who I was as a child! When I decided to make a company for my skin care products many names were discussed. While, some of those names may be used in the future, Olorun Skin was the obvious choice. It appears I had known the name before, maybe in a dream? So, I decided on Olorun Skin.
Who is Olorun?
Olorun is known in the Earth-centered religion of the Yoruba people of Southwestern Nigeria and Benin. Parts of this religion was practiced by people who were brought over during the Atlantic Slave Trade. Olorun is the name given for the source and is neither male nor female. Olorun is a divine source of all. It is what organizes and runs the universe. It is from where all things are made. Some think of Olorun as the sky God. I understand Olorun as the essence of all that is, the almighty Creator. Olorun is also known as Olurun, Olodumare, and Olofi. The concept of Olorun is similar across many religions and cultures. Olorun may be called Yahweh, Tao, Jehovah, or simply God to name a few.
Why choose Olorun?
As I previously stated, I have always felt as though God is with me. I also believe that our Earth is sacred and has everything that we need. My goal is to use ingredients that are natural. As Olorun is the creator, the name literally means God’s Skin or the source’s skin. We should be using the nutrients found in the earth for the ailments of our body. Our skin should shine as Gods. Therefore, when you use Olorun Skin You are Using the Essence of Heaven to Nourish Your Skin!
